Tasman Glacier Ice ADVENTURE

The Tasman Glacier Ice Adventure is more than just a helihike; it is an exploration of the mighty Haupapa Tasman Glacier and its features, designed for the fitter, more adventurous traveller.

After meeting and fitting out your equipment, the day kicks off with a scenic helicopter flight to a high landing, at approx. 1,400 metres above sea level. With your glacier guide, you traverse and explore the incredible glacial landscape of crevasses, moulins, and towering seracs.

We provide all the technical gear. You provide the enthusiasm, and get ready to learn new skills. Your guide will coach you in the use of crampons, ice axes, ice screws, and other tools of the ice climber. You’ll need these techniques when you squeeze through ice features, be lowered into moulins, then climb back up using ice tools and crampons, and your new skills!

The Tasman Glacier Ice Adventure is a true “highlight” experience. It provides a glimpse into the world of Kiwi mountaineering and the tradition of glacier guiding in New Zealand.

The Tasman Glacier Ice Adventure runs every Saturday from October to April.

The Tasman Glacier Ice Adventure

A Full Day on the White Ice

The Ice Adventure is a full day on a glacier, out in the elements for at least 7 hours. This trip is for fit people with a taste for exploration.

We expect:

  • A moderate or better level of aerobic fitness

  • Confidence walking on uneven terrain continuously for several hours, carrying a small backpack.

  • Able to easily climb up and down stairs without using a handrail

  • Be confident with some exposure to heights

  • Able to follow instructions (you know, it’s all about safety!)

The Ice Adventure is not suitable for children under 16 years old. Check the Tasman Glacier Helihike or Exclusive Tasman Encounter if you want to explore the glacier with your younger kids.

Explore The Ice

Cruising the glacier on the Ice Adventure may cover up to 5 kilometres of distance, with many diversions.

You will explore fascinating ice features, squeeze through winding canyons, peer into moulins and caves - and the many surprises the ice delivers!

The Gear Sort

To speed up the morning check-in we recommend visiting Alpine Guides’ office the day before your trip. Please ensure you arrive before 4:00 PM.

If you are traveling here from out of town, don’t worry, we will still have time in the morning.
